Mood Disorders Q&A
What are mood disorders?
Mood disorders are mental illnesses for which the primary symptom is depression. When you have depression, your world seems empty, hopeless, and confusing. You might sleep excessively or have difficulty sleeping. You could gain or lose weight. Severe depression can lead to suicidal thoughts and actions.
Around 9½% of American adults suffer from mood disorders. But even though they’re so common, stigma still surrounds them. People frequently view persons with mood disorders as emotionally and psychologically unstable, weaponizing mental illness against them.
Unfortunately, this attitude adds to mood disorder stigmatization, discouraging people from seeking treatment. EQ Perspectives welcomes patients with all forms of mood disorders.
What are common mood disorders?
Mood disorders include:
- Major depressive disorder (MDD): MDD or clinical depression causes ongoing sadness and despair that you can’t overcome without treatment. Dysthymia
- Dysthymia (persistent depressive disorder) is chronic (long-term) depression that lasts many years or is lifelong. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). PMDD causes mood swings, irritability, depression, and anxiety that happen at the same time each month during a woman’s menstrual cycle.
- Depressive disorder due to another medical condition
- You can also develop mood disorders because of illnesses like hypothyroidism (inadequate thyroid hormone levels).
What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder causes elevated moods, followed by depression. Symptoms of an elevated mood or manic episode include:
- Feeling powerful or invincible
- Dramatically increased self-esteem
- Decreased need for sleep
- Racing thoughts
- Problems concentrating
- Excessive energy
- Repeated movements and restlessness (psychomotor agitation)
- Impulsive or reckless activities
- Being more talkative
Generally, an elevated mood lasts 1-2 weeks, sometimes longer, followed by a return to depression. These mood swings continue over time, with some people stuck in a continual cycle between depression and mania. However, you only need to experience one manic episode to be considered bipolar.
