May Is Mental Health Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About It
May marks Mental Health Awareness Month—a nationwide effort to raise awareness about mental health, break down stigma, and promote access to care. It’s a time to have open conversations, offer support, and remind ourselves that mental health is just as important as physical health.
Why Mental Health Awareness Matters
Mental health challenges affect people from all walks of life, and the numbers speak for themselves. According to the National Council for Mental Well-being (2025):
- 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year
- 1 in 6 youth aged 6–17 in the U.S. have a mental health condition
- 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by age 14, and 75% begin by age 24
These statistics are more than just numbers—they represent our friends, coworkers, family members, and even ourselves. With so many affected, we all have a role to play in building a more supportive and understanding environment.
Reducing Stigma Starts with Us
Despite how common mental illness is, stigma still prevents many people from seeking help. So, how do we challenge that stigma?
- Talk openly about mental health
- Listen without judgment when someone shares their story
- Encourage seeking help, just as we would for a physical illness
- Educate ourselves and others on available treatment options
By normalizing mental health conversations, we foster empathy, connection, and healing.
Treatment Is a Step Toward Healing
One of the most powerful ways we can support mental health is by encouraging people to seek treatment. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but there are many paths to wellness—including individual therapy, group support, and more structured programs.
At EQ Perspectives, we’re here to walk alongside individuals at any stage of their journey. Our programs are designed to meet people where they are:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – A full-day program that offers intensive support, skill-building, and a structured therapeutic environment
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – A flexible option for those who need more than weekly therapy but still want to maintain their work, school, or home life
Both programs are available for adults and adolescents, ensuring access to care tailored to each individual’s age and needs.
