Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) Q&A
What is a partial hospitalization program (PHP)?
PHP is a service offered through EQ Perspectives for young people 13-18. It helps patients with severe mental health problems when outpatient treatments aren’t enough.
Partial hospitalization involves attending the hospital five days a week from 9am to 3pm. The program administrators coordinate with your child’s school regarding absences.
Patients have quiet time from 2pm to 3pm to focus on their schoolwork. The EQ Perspectives team ensures that children have the work they need to complete at home and during their time in the program.
The team also offers intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) from 4pm to 7pm, 3-5 days a week. These programs complement PHPs. Some children move to an IOP after completing their PHP.
What does a PHP achieve?
PHPs teach emotional intelligence. That involves naming and identifying the different emotions that people feel in various situations. PHPs highlight the benefits of emotional regulation and what it looks like to be “emotionally smart.”
The EQ Perspectives team sees emotional intelligence as something vital that’s often missing in children struggling with mental health problems. The team weaves this theme throughout the program in group discussions, activities, reflection periods, and recreation time.
The themes covered in group therapy include:
- Emotional regulation
- Resilience building
- Healthy relationships
- Conflict resolution
- Core values
- Validation
- Goal setting
- Coping skills
- Self-esteem and self-worthiness
During individual and family therapy sessions, patients and counselors discuss specific triggers and challenges at a deeper, more personalized pace.
On your child’s admission to the PHP, the EQ Perspectives team completes a psychosocial and psychiatric evaluation. Then, they create a personalized care plan.
Who benefits from PHPs?
EQ Perspectives welcomes 13- to 18-year-olds and teens still in high school. The focus is on young people with mood, anxiety, and/or eating disorders that have caused significant suffering and require specialized treatment to prevent a relapse or hospitalization.
Many PHP patients have recently left inpatient hospitalization. PHP offers regular daily support to help them transition back to everyday life. Some patients enter PHPs as a preventive measure to help them avoid inpatient admission to the hospital.
Often, patients wouldn’t be safe without the daily treatment and support a PHP provides.
